The Fish Tank
Let’s be honest…
You’re not really busy….
You’re just stuck in a never-ending loop of checking emails, replying to Slack messages, half-working on six things at once, and wondering why your actual goals never seem to move forward!
You end each day mentally exhausted, but somehow nothing that matters got done.
This is not a time problem…
It’s a priority problem.
Let me introduce you to one of the simplest
frameworks for fixing this mess…

The Fish Tank Rule
Picture your day as a fish tank.
It has limited space. Once it’s full, that’s it!
No more room, no more time.
Now, everything you do can be divided into three categories…
Big Rocks – The meaningful stuff. Your health. Your relationships. Your deep, purposeful work. These are the things that actually move your life forward.
Pebbles – Admin tasks, errands, emails. Necessary, sure but nobody looks back on their life thinking, “Wow, I really dominated those Monday morning Zoom meetings.”
Sand – Distractions. Notifications. Arguing with strangers online. That thing your coworker said that you’ll forget by Thursday. The mental junk food.
If you pour the sand in first, the endless little nothings, there’s no room left for the rocks.
Your tank fills with noise.
And the things that actually matter get squeezed out.
Again!

But if you put the rocks in first?
The pebbles settle in around them.
The sand either fits, or it doesn’t.
And guess what?
Life goes on just fine.

How To Use This Without Overcomplicating It..
#1. Identify Your Rocks
What genuinely matters to you this week?
Not someday.
Not eventually.
Now.
Health? Focused work?
Time with people you care about?
Write it down.
Stare at it daily.
#2. Schedule the Rocks First
Don’t “hope” you’ll get around to them.
You won’t!
Block time for the rocks before the calendar gets hijacked by pebbles and sand.
#3. Batch the Pebbles
Do your admin and life chores in blocks.
Stop letting them scatter across your entire day like confetti from hell.
#4. Say No to the Sand
That quick scroll on Instagram?
That meeting that should’ve been an email?
The third “urgent” email from someone who has no idea what they’re doing?
Sand.
Ignore it.
Let it pile up.
Let it stay small.
The tank isn’t getting any bigger.
The sand will always be there, begging for your attention.
And no one else is going to protect your time for you.
But here’s the good news…
You get to choose what goes in first.
You get to decide what matters.
And every day is a fresh shot to build something that actually feels good to live inside.
Start with your big rocks.
Build your day around what matters most.
Let the noise fall where it may.
It won’t be perfect.
But it will be yours.
And that’s how progress happens…
not all at once, but one rock at a time.
I hope you enjoyed this week’s Knowledge Bomb.
See you next week for another instalment.
